Government must end the impunity around torture, make special arrangements to prosecute gender-based violence, redouble its efforts to arrest maternal deaths and ensure that each child has a birth certificate. These are some of the recommendations made by the Dullah Omar Institute in its submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council. They were made as part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a periodic review of the human rights records of all 193 UN Member States. The Human Rights Council will review South Africa in 2017.
