Botswana

This section contains a brief description of the legal system of Botswana.

Botswana gained independence from Britain on 30 September 1966 and has enjoyed civilian leadership since independence.

Botswana has a mixed legal system of civil law influenced by the Roman-Dutch model, customary law and English common law.

Botswana has a constitution dating from independence, which has a provision providing that no person shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading punishmentor other treatment.
