Climate change litigation: Global trends
According to a recent report, “climate change litigation continues to grow in importance as a way of either advancing or delaying effective action on climate change”. The overall number of climate change-related cases has more than doubled since 2015, with more than 1,000 cases brought in the last six years. Cases that aim to induce changes to society are also on the rise.
In this webinar we talk to Joana Setzer from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, one of the authors of the report, about the “strategic” nature of this litigation, current trends in litigation and future developments to watch, the types of legal challenges that are being brought and where they are being fought, areas in which legal action appears to have greater likelihood of success and less, and the nature of any “broader societal shift” that these cases suggest might be underway.
Speaker:
- Joana Setzer - Assistant Professor at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, at the LSE.
Hosts:
- Prof Derek Powell, Dullah Omar Institute, UWC
- Dr Angela van der Berg, Global Environmental Law Centre, UWC
