Memorial Service of Dr Zola Skweyiya

Please join us in celebrating and honouring the life and contribution of Dr Zola Skweyiya, a former colleague at the University of the Western Cape and a former minister in the South African government. Dr Skweyiya joined UWC in 1990 after returning to South Africa from political exile where he worked with Adv Dullah Omar in the newly established Community Law Centre based in the Law Faculty.

There, these ANC heavyweights – along with others like Justice Albie Sachs, former minister Brigitte Mabandla, former minister Prof Kader Asmal and Bulelani Ngcuka, the former head of the National Prosecuting Authority – focused on research and advocacy. The Centre was later renamed the Dullah Omar Institute. With the unbanning of the ANC and other political parties, Dr Skweyiya and others helped with the constitutional negotiations that would to an end the apartheid regime and usher in the birth of a democratic South Africa.

After the first democratic elections in 1994, Dr Skweyiya and other colleagues – including former Rector Jakes Gerwel – were offered government positions. Dr Skweyiya was named Minister of Public Services and Administration. His last Cabinet position was Minister of Social Development.
