Dr Melissa N.S Ziswa

Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr Melissa N.S. Ziswa is a post doctoral researcher within the SARChI Chair in Multilevel Government, Law and Development. She is a comparative law expert with a profound focus on the dynamics of constitutional concept transfers, federalism, and decentralisation across Africa. She holds a Doctor of Laws (LLD) in Law, State and Multilevel Government from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) which was awarded in 2025. Her extensive academic background also includes a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from UWC, a Master of Laws (LLM) in Multilevel Government, Law and Development (cum laude) from UWC and a Postgraduate Diploma in Federalism, Decentralisation and Conflict Resolution from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Dr Ziswa's doctoral thesis, titled "The influence of South Africa's model of devolution in Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia: why and how did the model, concepts and texts migrate?", underscores her capacity for conducting extensive research into the complexities of constitutional migration and the implementation of devolution provisions. Her interdisciplinary expertise extends to multilevel governance, public policy, the rule of law, and African development.

Beyond her academic scholarship, Dr Ziswa is actively engaged in impactful applied research and policy reform. As a committed educator and faculty member, she established and maintained efficient academic workflows as a Graduate Lecturing Coordinator at UWC. She also served as an adept mentor, collaborating with senior faculty to supervise and review postgraduate students' theses. Demonstrating strong academic citizenship, she has previously served as a student representative on both the Law Faculty Board and the Law Professorial Appointment and Promotions Committee.
