Public participation in Constitutional Amendments: A new Approach towards constitution making in Nigeria

Nigeria as a nation has a chequered history of constitutional development. The first real attempt at some form of constitution making actually started in 1914 with the merger of the north and south Protectorates of Nigeria under the leadership of Fredrick Lord Langard. In 1945 a proposal was adopted by the Legislative Council under Sir Arthur Richards for the making of a constitution while in 1948, under the Governorship of Sir John McPherson, a new constitution was proposed to replace the 1945 constitution which it took into account the views of the public for the first time.
