Appointment of Dr Jean Redpath: Member of the Provincial Safety Advisory Committee

The Dullah Omar Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Jean Redpath, Senior Researcher in the Africa Criminal Justice Reform programme, as member of the Provincial Safety Advisory Committee. She is appointed as a representative of a non-governmental organisation involved in policing or related areas.

Dr Jean Redpath: “Serving on the Provincial Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) will provide an opportunity to be part of setting the safety agenda for the province. The Committee is a policy advisory and sounding board for the province around key issues relating to the work of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety. Serving on the committee requires an understanding of policing and safety issues, as well as an understanding of the role of the provincial sphere of government in relation to other spheres of government.  I look forward to applying my knowledge in the real-world context.”

PSAC was established in terms of the Western Cape Community Safety Act 3 of 2013 (WCCSA). The purpose of the Committee is to advise and make recommendations to the Provincial Minister of Community Safety in the Western Cape, related to:

  • the functions of the Province in terms of Chapter 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and Chapter 8 of the Constitution of the Western Cape, 1997;
  • strategies, policies, budgets and annual performance plans in respect of the functions in terms of Chapter 11 of the Constitution and Chapter 8 of the Western Cape Constitution, 1997;
  • regulations in terms of the WCCSA that may be necessary; or
  • any other matter arising from the application of the WCCSA.

The committee consists of a representative of the business community; a member of the judiciary, a senior member of an academic institution, a representative from a non-governmental organisation, and the Head of Department of Community Safety.
