Book unpacks transformation of local government in South Africa

The Journey to Transform Local Government edited by Dr Tinashe Chigwata, Prof Jaap De Visser, Lungelwa Kaywood was launched at the 2nd SALGA Research Colloquium, which took place on 11-12 March 2019 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

This book is the first of its nature coming out of a close collaboration between SALGA and an academic institution in South Africa. It seeks to inform and shape policy debates on key issues that affects local government.

The book gives particular attention to various issues at the continuum of local government transformation in South Africa. The authors of this book are impressive in many ways. They are town planners, engineers, lawyers, social scientists and economists, among others. What makes this book special is that it does not limit itself to either an academic or a practitioner’s outlook. Instead, it seeks to combine both perspectives in one publication that has undergone the rigours of academic review.

The authors represent academic institutions, government institutions, civil society and private consulting firms. Some contributions present conceptual and legal research, others offer the results of quantitative research. Yet others present qualitative research findings. Overall, the book provides some of the latest research on local government, produced by local academics and practitioners and grounded in South Africa’s reality.
