Roundtable Seminar on housing allocation and the Housing Demand Database system in South Africa
CLC and SERI have been conducting research into the Housing Demand Database (HDD) system and housing allocation in South Africa, looking at both national and provincial (Gauteng and Western Cape) systems, as well as how municipalities in these provinces navigate policies and processes.
Following a series of focus group discussions with community members in the Western Cape and Gauteng, the seminar workshop presented a platform to share the research findings and community insights on issues pertaining to access to housing allocation and to explore challenges facing individuals and communities in accessing decent housing, particularly around registering for housing and subsequent allocation.
The aim of this research is to identify how the current policies and systems operate, ascertain developments at provincial and national levels, highlight challenges with current policy and practice, and promote and strengthen public policy dialogue between government and civil society around access to housing in South Africa.
The roundtable seminar was attended by a range of stakeholders from government, civil society, community leaders, community based organisations, and academia.
Research report will soon be available on Community Law Centre website.
