Visiting Researcher with SERP and WDI: Kelly Jane Bishop

Kelly has a master’s degree in Law and is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Public Law of the University of Berne in Switzerland. Her PhD research looks at the human rights obligations in relation to gender-based poverty with a focus on urban areas, substantive equality, and the right to housing.

During her work for the Thematic Cluster Police and Justice at the Swiss Centre of Expertise in Human Rights, she was involved in the publication of several expert reports on the implementation of international human rights guarantees in Switzerland. In her position as Junior Consultant at Ximpulse, she was involved in various projects in relation to human rights, access to justice and participation. 

Kelly has been in Cape Town for a month now and will stay here until next year. Her impression so far:

My research on gender-based poverty deals in-depth with socio-economic rights, urban areas and the living situations of womxn. My stay at SERP and WDI represents a significant advantage for the research project and enables me to review my findings through a critical exchange with renowned, committed, and international researchers and experts as well as to test my preliminary results. I am thankful for the valuable exchange and support at DOI, and I am looking forward to further insightful and in-depth discussions and to learn more during my stay.
