Webinar on a New Study: Toiling for survival - Children in the urban informal sector in Africa

On 9 December 2025, the Children’s Rights Project hosted a webinar to explore the findings of a new study titled 'Toiling for Survival: Children in the Urban Informal Sector in Africa.'

It was developed by the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF) under the African Children’s Charter Project and recently launched (2nd December 2025) at the 46th Ordinary Session of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in Maseru, Lesotho.

In presenting the findings, Mr. Yehualashet Mekonen, Director of the African Child Observatory Programme at the ACPF, outlined the hazardous conditions experienced by children working in the urban informal sector in selected cities across Africa. The major drivers that push them into such work were highlighted, as well as the persistent gaps in enforcement despite existing legal protections. He also highlighted good practices and policy recommendations aimed at strengthening child protection and addressing the underlying root causes. The report can be accessed at here.

This webinar forms part of the Children’s Rights and Business series, which will continue in 2026.
