This title was derived from an explanation which a survivor of domestic violence had given on the intersection between gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS (she had also contracted HIV from her abusive partner): “Gender-based violence happens behind closed doors and HIV is killing women behind those closed doors.  The solution is to break down those doors.”

This publication has been distributed to organisations which deal with gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS in the SADC region.  Southern Africa, which has the highest HIV prevalence in the world, has correctly been described as the ‘epicenter of the HIV/AIDS pandemic’.
