South Africa cannot end impunity while prosecutions remain trapped in a law that is not fit for purpose.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) urgently requires a new law that will strengthen it significantly. Good prosecutors are working in a system built for a different historical moment, unable to move serious crime and corruption from investigation to appropriate resolution.

Civil Society is coming together to advocate for reform.

Please join us for the launch of the Prosecutions Project, a national campaign for the reform of the National Prosecuting Authority Act.

The Prosecutions Project is a national initiative calling for a prosecution system that can operate without fear, favour or prejudice, as is required by the Constitution.

Violent crime, serious corruption and organised crime cases continue to stall, not because prosecutors lack commitment, but because the legal framework they operate within is outdated.

The National Prosecuting Authority Act was drafted hastily in 1997, nearly 30 years ago. Much has changed and numerous structural problems have been identified.

Our aim is clear: to modernise the National Prosecuting Authority Act so South Africa has a prosecution service capable of swift and effective prosecutions that treats all as equal before the law.

Without an effective prosecution service, accountability remains a principle rather than a practice. When prosecutions work, the country works.
